چکیده

bstract—The von Economo neurons are one of the few nown specializations to hominoid cortical microcircuitry. ere, using a Golgi preparation of a human postmortem rain, we describe the dendritic architecture of this unique opulation of neurons. We have found that, in contrast to ayer 5 pyramidal neurons, the von Economo neurons have parse dendritic trees and symmetric apical and basal comonents. This result provides the first detailed anatomical escription of a neuron type unique to great apes and umans. © 2006 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of IBRO.

Total number and volume of Von Economo neurons in the cerebral cortex of cetaceans.

Von Economo neurons (VENs) are a type of large, layer V spindle-shaped neurons that were previously described in humans, great apes, elephants, and some large-brained cetaceans. Here we report the presence of Von Economo neurons in the anterior cingulate (ACC), anterior insular (AI), and frontopolar (FP) cortices of small odontocetes, including the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the R...

Neuropathology of the anterior midcingulate cortex in young children with autism.

The anterior cingulate cortex, which is involved in cognitive and affective functioning, is important in investigating disorders in which individuals exhibit impairments in higher-order functions. In this study, we examined the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) at the cellular level in patients with autism and in controls. We focused our analysis on layer V of the aMCC because it contains von...

Human von Economo neurons express transcription factors associated with Layer V subcerebral projection neurons.

The von Economo neurons (VENs) are large bipolar Layer V projection neurons found chiefly in the anterior cingulate and frontoinsular cortices. Although VENs have been linked to prevalent illnesses such as frontotemporal dementia, autism, and schizophrenia, little is known about VEN identity, including their major projection targets. Here, we undertook a developmental transcription factor expre...

Greater loss of von Economo neurons than loss of layer II and III neurons in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

Previous studies have shown a selective reduction of von Economo neurons (VENs) in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). However, the alleged selectivity rests on the comparison between VENs and other neurons in cortical layer V, while it has been established that neurons in the superficial cortical layers (I-III) are particularly affected in bvFTD. The purpose of this study was t...

Selective vulnerability of von Economo neurons in frontotemporal dementia

164 Views & Reviews Selective vulnerability of von Economo neurons in frontotemporal dementia In many types of neurodegenerative disease there is selective vulnerability of groups of neurons that show evidence of degenerative change long before other neighboring neurons. In Alzheimer’s disease, neurons in layer II of the transentorhinal and entorhinal cortex show neurofibrillary tangles while n...
